EOHR holds a round table on ” Guarantees of fair trial in the light of new terrorism bill” next Wednesday

The Egyptian Organization For Human Rights(EOHR)holds a round table entitled” Guarantees of   fair trial in the light of  new terrorism bill” on Wednesday 13/5/2009 at 5:00 PM at EOHR’s office. The round table includes a group of university professors ,representatives of political parties and human rights activists.


Mr. Hafez Abu Seada, Secretary General of EOHR pointed out that the round table aims at discussing several questions as follows:


– To what extent is there a need to enact a new law to combat-terrorism?


 Would the new Terrorism law be a codification of the Emergency Law?

– To what extent would anti terrorism law protect rights and public freedoms.

– Mechanisms of harmonization between guarantees of human rights and combating terrorism in the proposed project.

– The guarantees of fair trial in the proposed project.

– Will there be a competent court for terrorism combating like the military courts?

  The most appropriate model of international legislations to combat terrorism for the situation in Egypt.


Mr. Hafez Abu Seada, Secretary General of EOHR confirmed that the seminar will be held in the framework of “Terrorism combating observatory through promoting   democracy” which started its activity in February 2008 supported by European Union .He added that the main goal of the observatory is to support the democratic development in Egypt through monitoring and controlling the impact of the inclusion of terrorism combating articles in the constitutional amendments on this development, and on the other hand the impact of terrorism law on this development.


The round table will include both of Dr. Ahmed Abu Baraka, member of the People’s Assembly, Dr.. Adel Amer , Professor of Public International Law, Mr. Essam Islambouli , lawyer at cassation court .Dr. Essam Al-Arian – former member of the parliament, Mr. Essam Sheha , Member of the supreme body of Al Wafd Party, Mohammed Amer , member of the parliament and  Mr. Wahid Abdul Maguid , expert at Al-Ahram Center for Political and Strategic Studies.
