A new deterioration for freedom of opinion and expression, Dokki Misdemeanor Court sentences the editor in chief of Al Shorouk newspaper and others to one year imprisonment

The Egyptian Organization for Human Rights (EOHR) expresses its deepest worries on the continuing issuance of imprisonment sentences  against journalists. On 27/10/2009 Dokki Misdemeanor Court sentenced Salama Ahmed Salama, editor in chief of Al Shorouk newspaper and Saber Mashhour, chief of accident department in the same newspaper to one year imprisonment and a fine of 200.00 L.E in case No. 14212-2009 which the matter which represents a new deterioration  for freedom of opinion and expression guaranteed under the Egyptian Constitution and international covenants concerned with human rights. EOHR calls Syrian authorities for releasing “Haitham Al Maleh”

The Egyptian Organization for Human Rights (EOHR)  expresses its condemnation for the arrest of Syrian activist “Haitham Al Maleh” by the Syrian authorities since 14/10/ 2009 accusing him of  spreading false news and insulting the President of the Republic in a clear violation to the right to freedom of opinion and expression and the right to freedom and personal security. EOHR announces the establishment of the Egyptian Alliance for the integrity of civil society

At the end of a press conference held by EOHR in cooperation with the German Friedrich Naumann Foundation on Tuesday, 20.10.2009 under the title of “Towards a democratic rules for Egyptian civil society”, representatives of political parties, trade unions and NGOs agreed to establish what so called ” The Egyptian alliance for the integrity of civil society” “, whose reference is depending on international standards and principles and rules of good governance. EOHR calls for investigating the death of Youssef Al Zohiry

The Egyptian Organization for Human Rights submitted a report on Wednesday 14/10/2009, to Mr. Abdel Meguid Mahmoud, Attorney General and Mr. Habib Al-Adli, Minister of Interior and Mr. Mukhlis Kotb, Secretary General of the National Council for Human Rights, expressing its deepest worries on what has been said in mass media about the death of Youssef Al Zohiry, Palestinian, as a result of torture in Burj Al Arab prison . A Press conference For EOHR entitled “Towards a democratic rules for the Egyptian civil society”

Good-bye Dr. Mohammad El Sayed Said Leader of human rights movement

The Egyptian Organization for Human Rights with great sadness and sorrow mourns Dr. Mohamed El-Sayed Said, writer and one of human rights leader in Egypt. He is considered one of the first founders for EOHR as he struggled to enhance the status of human rights and promote democracy in the country and paid his freedom  and was sentenced to imprisonment in the late of eighties. EOHR calls for stopping the administrative decision of closing down Al Balagh Al Gadid Newspaper

The Egyptian Organization for Human Rights (EOHR) expresses its denial on the decision of The Supreme Council Of Press which issued to close down  Al Balagh Al Gadid Newspaper. The decision is considered a clear violation to the right to freedom of opinion and expression and the right to exchange information. 30 NGOs discuss the Code of Conduct for the exercise of democracy inside NGOs

At the end of a seminar entitled ” Mechanisms of democratic exercise for NGOs in Egypt” which was  held by “EOHR” in cooperation with “Friedrich Naumann Foundation” on Sunday, 4/10/2009, representatives of 30 NGOs discussed the  Code of Conduct on the mechanisms of democratic exercise for NGOs in Egypt. Participants confirmed that this code contains a set of standards that controlling the conduct of NGOs. They called for abolishing Law No. 84 /2002 and enacting a new law that guarantees the establishment of NGOs through just notification. Read the rest of this entry »
