The Egyptian Organization for Human Rights (EOHR) expresses its denial on the decision of The Supreme Council Of Press which issued to close down Al Balagh Al Gadid Newspaper. The decision is considered a clear violation to the right to freedom of opinion and expression and the right to exchange information. EOHR calls for stopping the decision as the report submitted against the newspaper is still pending investigations .
The Committee of printing foreign newspapers has decided on Sunday, 5/10/2009 to revoke the license of Al Balagh Al Gadid Newspaper which is being published according to a foreign license as a result to a report submitted to Attorney General on fabricating such false news to defame and blackmail some Egyptian artists.
EOHR recognizes the dangerous effects of rumors and false news as it is against all forms of defamation, however it refuses any decision to close down any newspaper without a judicial decision according to Article 48 of the Egyptian Constitution and pursuant to international conventions on human rights.
EOHR confirmed that such hasty decisions issued by administrative bodies violate the right to freedom of opinion and expression. It calls for canceling all laws that restrict the right to issuing newspapers as well as the abolition of monitoring foreign newspapers . It confirms its full solidarity with the demands of Journalists syndicate on the protection of journalists and promoting freedom of opinion and expression and human rights.
