EOHR calls for investigating the death of Youssef Al Zohiry

The Egyptian Organization for Human Rights submitted a report on Wednesday 14/10/2009, to Mr. Abdel Meguid Mahmoud, Attorney General and Mr. Habib Al-Adli, Minister of Interior and Mr. Mukhlis Kotb, Secretary General of the National Council for Human Rights, expressing its deepest worries on what has been said in mass media about the death of Youssef Al Zohiry, Palestinian, as a result of torture in Burj Al Arab prison .

Mr. Hafez Abu Seada, Secretary-General of EOHR, Confirmed that this fact – if it is true- is considered a clear violation for international covenants and the Egyptian Constitution represented in the following articles:
Article 42 of the Egyptian Constitution
Article 126, 127, 129 of the Egyptian Penal Code
Article 40 of the Criminal Procedure code
Article 5 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights
Article 7 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights.

The International Convention against Torture.

At the end of the report Abu Seada called for investigating the fact and referring perpetrators of torture to speedy trial if the fact is true.
- It also calls the Egyptian authorities for immediate release of all detainees, including Palestinians detainees in Egyptian prisons who were arrested under the emergency law as they were not charged with any crime.
