EOHR calls Syrian authorities for releasing “Haitham Al Maleh”

The Egyptian Organization for Human Rights (EOHR)  expresses its condemnation for the arrest of Syrian activist “Haitham Al Maleh” by the Syrian authorities since 14/10/ 2009 accusing him of  spreading false news and insulting the President of the Republic in a clear violation to the right to freedom of opinion and expression and the right to freedom and personal security. EOHR calls for his immediate release.



“Al Maleh” has participated in the establishment of the Syrian Association for Human Rights since 2001, he assumed the presidency of it till 2006, also he is a founding member of the coalition of ” Damascus Declaration for Democratic National Change”. He was detained in 14/10/2009 and transferred to the military prosecution, he was investigated by the military prosecution in Damascus as the investigation was focused on a number of media interviews and a total of articles which  have been written recently . He was accused by the military prosecution of “spreading false news that weaken the spirit of the nation and insulting the president of the republic and the Syrian judiciary!”


EOHR has previously condemned the arrest of Mohanad Al Mosni, lawyer and human rights activists, calling for his immediate release.


EOHR confirms its full solidarity with the human rights activist and calling Syrian authorities to release him and not to assault human rights activists . Also it calls for releasing all opinion detainees and lifting the state of emergency and abolishing  special courts.


At the same time EOHR appealed to all local , regional and international organizations working in human rights to stick together to call the Syrian government for the immediate release for detainees of human rights activists.
