The Egyptian Organization for Human Rights (EOHR) expresses sorrow following receiving information about the deterioration of Sheikh Omar Abdel Rahman’s health in North Carolina Prison in the United States. Sheikh Omar was accused of New York bombings in 1993.  Besides being diabetic since 40 years, Sheikh Omar suffers high blood pressure. Since his detention, Sheikh Omar was visited once by his wife and conducted only two phone calls with his wife also. He was kept in solitary cell for 18 years.

EOHR stresses on Sheikh Omar’s right to suitable health care according to the international standards related to treating prisoners. EOHR also calls the Egyptian Supreme Council for Armed Forces (SCAF) for immediate transfer of Sheikh Omar Abdel Rahman to Egypt, his home country, to receive the required healthcare and medication. In Egypt, the prisoners are often released when they suffer hard diseases.
