EOHR calls for providing the democratic atmosphere for the presidential election campaigns

The Egyptian Organization for Human Rights (EOHR) denounces attacking the supporters of Amr Mosa, the expected presidential candidate, by thugs, when entering their campaigning conference in Damanhour Sporting Club, Behaira. Such occurrence is a severe violation to the freedom of expression.

EOHR emphasizes on the right of political participation and freedom of expression, which are guaranteed according to the Human Rights Universal Declaration and the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights. EOHR also calls the Prosecutor General and the Egyptian Minister of Interior for immediate investigation on the violence and taking the perpetrators to accountability.

Mr. Hafez Abu Seada, the head of EOHR, stated that the incident came as a crime against the freedom of expression and political participation, stressed on within the international standards of human rights. What happened was against the rule of law, one of the main demands of the Egyptian revolutionist. Such event wastes the principle of equal opportunities among the presidential candidates. The electoral campaigns should be provided with all the guarantees related to the right to peaceful assembly and freedom of expression as well as distributing publications and campaigning materials.
