The Egyptian Organization for Human Rights (EOHR) denounces the statements of Sheikh Wagdi Ghoniem against Pope Shenouda III, the Godfather of the Coptic Orthodox Church, who passed-away on March 17, 2012. “Yesterday, the ideal of all unbelievers, Nazer Gayed, passed away” said Sheikh Wagdi Ghoniem.

EOHR clearly denounces any insult or rudeness against any of the heavenly religions. EOHR emphasizes on the importance of the rule of the state on protection of religions and thoughts, according to articles no. 4 and 25 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights. The covenant enables states to bane any activities aim at spreading hatred against the heavenly religions and thoughts. EOHR invites the Egyptian people to face this kind of negative campaigning against the prominent Egyptian characters and invites the state also to protect the freedom of thought and believing. Such statements lead to the spread of the ideas of intolerance and religious extremism. Nobody is allowed to launch this kind of criticism against any religion or religious figures.
