On June 4, 2013, North Cairo Criminal Court issued the final verdict on the lawsuit no. 1110, year 2012, Kasr Al Nile, known as NGOs foreign finance lawsuit. 26 accused representatives of international civil society organizations were given 5-year sentences, 5 representatives were given 2-year sentences and 11 representatives were given 1 year suspended sentence. The final judgment also included confiscating the international NGOs’ belongings.

The lawsuit includes 43 political and human rights activists, among them are 19 Americans, 2 Germans and 16 Egyptians. The activists belong to International Center for U.S. reporters, Freedom House, IRI and NDI from America and Konrad Adenauer from Germany. The political and human rights’ activists were charged with operating unlicensed branches of international foundations in Egypt.

The defending lawyers were Negad Al Borai, the head of the United Group for Legal Advising and Hafez Abu Seada, the head of the Egyptian Organization for Human Rights (EOHR).

The Egyptian Organization for Human Rights (EOHR) stated that the Egyptian political environment does not guarantee freedom of assembly, organization or association; the current situation in Egypt indicates that an intention to destroy local and international civil society organizations in Egypt does exist. It is known that the civil society was one of the most significant factors of the Egyptian revolution. For a long time, NGOs have been uncovering the human rights violations.

Mr. Hafez Abu Seada, the head of EOHR, affirmed that what happened is definitely an unjustified measure against the international civil society organizations working in Egypt aims at facing the Egyptian people’s calls for democracy and rule of law. It is clear that what is happening in Egypt these days is a systematic plan aimed at destroying local and international civil society organizations. The difficult situation of local and international NGOs in Egypt simply provides evidence on that.
