Civil Society Organizations will hold a workshop tomorrow, October 9 to discuss the draft of the new law of associations proposed by a high committee that was formed by the Ministry of Social Solidarity. The workshop will be held at the conference room at the Ministry’s headquarter.

The high committee was formed based on a decision from Dr. Ahmed Al Borai, Minster of Social Solidarity. The Ministry wanted to survey the opinions of civil society stakeholders whom are concerned with the new law, as they are the most capable of knowing what is requested from that draft law, as well as expressing their vision regarding the law and the future of civil society in Egypt.

From his side, Hafez Abu Seada, President of EOHR, expressed the progress of the world towards fostering the role of NGOs and civil society; therefore Egypt should keep pace with that progress via serious actions, not mere rhetoric. He further added that the legislative system should be modified based on freeing civil society organizations, stressing on the necessity of having a social dialogue between the government and civil society leaders to achieve a consensus that will lead eventually to the required democracy.
