The Egyptian Organization for Human Rights (EOHR) organizes a conference on “Freedom of Opinion and Expression in the New Egyptian Media System” next Tuesday and Wednesday 14-15 October 2014 at Pyramisa Hotel in AlDokki. Several journalists, activists of the civil society, professors and some representatives of the political and social forces will participate in the event.

The aim of the conference is to discuss the characteristics of the system set in compliance with the objectives of the new constitution adopted after the revolution of the 30 June 2013 and to understand the ruling principles that constitute its legal environment. The conference will also compare the constitutional component of the new system with its counterpart in the actual system, as well as the conditions that shall be fulfilled in a national media environment that can be described as consistent with the international norms and charters relevant to the freedom of opinion and expression. Moreover, the conference will discuss the procedures of the establishment of independent councils, set forth in Articles 211, 212 and 213 of the constitution on the media system, in a way that ensures the independence of such councils and their ability to defend the freedom of opinion and expression and at the same time to regulate the field of media to develop the system of the press and the media through what encourages the exercise of the freedom of opinion and expression at the national level.
