EOHR demands the release of Ahmed Al Khattib on health related grounds
The Egyptian Organization for Human Rights (EOHR) expresses its great concern regarding the rapidly deteriorating medical condition of Ahmed Al Khattib, and implores the Prosecutor General to order his release as his life is in real danger.
Ahmed Al Khattib, a university student who is detained and standing trial for his alleged membership of the Muslim Brotherhood suffers from severe health complications.
The Medical report released from Kasr Al Aini Hospital revealed that Mr. Khattib is suffering from a fevor, swelling spleen and liver and immense weight loss. The report recommended that Mr. Khattib should recieve immediate medical treatment or else he might die.
Every citizen has the right to healthcare according to article 18 of the Egyptian constitution. The International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural rights also stipulated the same principle.
With that said, EOHR demands the release of Ahmed Al Khattib in accordance with articles 486 and 489 of the criminal proceedings code which allows the release of a prisoner if his or her medical condition demands it.
Hafez Abu Seada president of EOHR said that medical care is right to every prisoner in Egyptian centers of detention and demanded the release of all ill prisoners whose health condition requires advanced medical care. He also called upon prison authorities to enhance and further develop the medical facilities in prisons and centers of detention.
