President Trump’s decision to move the US embassy to Jerusalem is a grave violation of International Human Rights Law

The Egyptian Organization for Human Rights (EOHR) strongly condemns the US President’s unilateral recognition of Jerusalem as the unified capital of the State of Israel. EOHR also condemns Mr. Trump’s decision to move the US embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, stressing that such a move only serves to undermine the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people. EOHR reiterates that Mr. Trump’s actions further the violation of Palestinian rights, especially their right to self-determination. This move will only enflame tensions in the region and EOHR underlines the fact that Israel’s annexation of East Jerusalem contradicts international law, and the United States endorsement of this illegal measure makes it complicit in the violation. EOHR believes that Mr. Trump’s recognition of East Jerusalem will potentially destroy the peace process and attempts to shed legitimacy on Israel’s illegal occupation of Arab lands.

Dr. Hafez Abu Seada the president of EOHR said that Trump’s decision disregards international human rights law, and UN security council resolution 242 in particular which obligates Israel to withdraw from all territories it seized during the 1967 six-day war which includes East Jerusalem.

Abu Seada added that in 2004 the ICJ released an advisory opinion regarding the Separation Wall Israel is building on its border with the occupied West Bank. The opinion deemed the wall illegal as it annexed parts of the Palestinian West Bank including East Jerusalem.
