EOHR Strongly condemns the armed assault on Justice Hesham Geneina

The Egyptian Organization for Human Rights (EOHR) strongly condemns the armed assault on Justice Hesham Geneina the former Chairman of the Central Auditing Organization one of Egypt’s top anti corruption agencies. Mr. Geneina is also a senior member of former potential presidential candidate Lieutenant General Sami Anan who was arrested recently for not acquiring legal permission from the military to run for office. The attack on Mr. Geneina took place on Saturday the 27th of January in New Cairo, and it left him with severe injuries that included a broken leg, as well as face a head lacerations.

Geneina was on his way to court to attend a session looking into his judicial appeal of President el Sisi’s decree that sacked him from his office after claiming that corruption in the 3 years after the 30th of June revolution has cost Egypt over 76 Billion USD.

Mr. Geneina was attacked with blades, and suffered severe injuries as a result, and this is a clear violation of his right to physical safety, security and freedom.

EOHR calls upon the Ministry of Interior to quickly investigate the assault of Justice Geneina as this alarming development endangers the principles of human rights and the concept of rule of law.

EOHR finds the intimidation and terrorizing of public figures or any ordinary individual abominable and unacceptable and call upon authorities to seriously uphold the people’s rights to security and freedom.

EOHR also beseeches the Public Prosecutor to initiate a serious investigation into the incident and to delegate it to an investigative Judge due to the seriousness of the incident especially that the individuals who assaulted Justice Geneina have been implicated in the past in assaulting journalists at the press syndiacte according to what Mr. Gamal Abdel Rehim (A syndicate board member). The attackers were also connected to a similar attack on a police officer according to Al Masry Al Youm which shows a dubious pattern that must be investigated to reveal their real motives.

Dr. Hafez Abu Seada the president of EOHR affirmed that what happened to Justice Geneina is a blatant and unforgivable violation of Human Rights especially the rights to physical safety and security. Abu Seada added that those responsible for this reprehensible crime should be held accountable for threathening basic freedoms and rights protected by the Egyptian Constitution and International Human Rights Law.
