EOHR condemns the relocation of the US embassy in Israel to occupied Jerusalem

The Egyptian Organization for Human Rights (EOHR) strongly once again condemns President Donald Trump’s decision to move the US embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem. The decision is due to be executed on the 14th of May 2018 which comes one day before what Israel celebrates as Independence Day and Palestinians commemorate with grief as the Nakba (Catastrophe) due to the displacement of over 700,000 Palestinians by the then nascent Israeli state.

Mr. Trump’s decision cements the United States’ recognition of Israel’s illegal annexation of East Jerusalem which discredits the US’s role a mediator in the peace process and further provokes the sentiments of oppressed Palestinians in the occupied territories. The US decision comes in clear violation of international law and multiple UN resolutions; among them are General Assembly resolution 194 that called for protection and free access to the Holy Places in Jerusalem, as well Security Council resolution 242 which calls upon Israel to withdraw from Arab territories it occupied during the 1967 six-day war, and East Jerusalem where among those territories conquered through an illegal act of aggression that came in violation of the UN charter. Moreover, UN Security Council resolutions 476, 478 and 1073 condemned Israeli’s illegal annexation of East Jerusalem which dates back to the year 1980.

The annexation of East Jerusalem and all the repercussions it had on the Palestinian inhabitants of the disputed city dangerously violates a number of their basic rights and freedoms including the right to freedom of movement and right to self-determination. Israel has violently repressed peaceful demonstrations by Palestinians in the Occupied Palestinian territories leading to dozens of fatalities and thousands of injuries. Israeli troops used live ammunition to disperse protesters on multiple occasions in what can only be considered a crime against humanity and a grotesque to the right to life which is enshrined by the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights.

EOHR would like to finally commend all members of international community who rejected the US assault on Palestinian rights and legitimate aspirations. EOHR also underlines the fact that most of EU member states, the United Nations, the Arab League and its members as well as multiple Interational, regional and local human rights NGOs have vehemently refused to endorse or give legitimacy to the relocation of the US embassy or the Israeli annexation of East Jerusalem. This shows a united global front that believes in the peace process and rejects unilateral policies that only serve to aggravate tensions and put innocent civilians in harm’s way.

Dr. Hafez Abu Seada the president of EOHR commented on the latest developments stating that President’s Trump’s decisions to move the embassy to Jerusalem comes in violation of international law and completely disregards the legitimate inalienable rights of the Palestinian people. Abu Seada added that the international community should pressure Israel to commit to the peace process. Abu Seada concluded that Palestinian rights should be restored and that  can only take place by the establishment of a Palestinian State in the West Bank and Gaza with East Jerusalem as its capital, and granting Palestinian refugees their right to return to their homes and native land.
