EOHR demands the immediate release of activist Wael Abbas

The Egyptian Organization for Human Rights (EOHR) expresses its deep concern regarding the arrest of the renowned blogger and human rights activist Wael Abbas by the Egyptian authorities in flagrant violation of Abbas’s rights to liberty and security of person as well as his right to freedom of movement and  freedom of expression.

Security forces stormed  Wael Abbas’s home at dawn today, arrested him and took him to an unknown location, after confiscating his computers, telephones, d number of books and some of his other belongings.

EOHR strongly condemns of the unjustified incarceration of  Wael Abbas, which constitutes a flagrant violation of the Egyptian constitution, article 9 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights and article 17 of the Declaration on the Protection of Human Rights Defenders.

Dr. Hafez Abu Seada, President of EOHR, voiced his deep concern regarding these arbitrary measures against peaceful activists and regarding the increasing restrictions placed on freedom of opinion and expression, which comes in clear violation of the right to freedom and personal security guaranteed by the Constitution and international human rights law. Abu Seadaalso Called upon the Egyptian authorities to immediately release the blogger Wael Abbas without any delay.
