EOHR calls for an immediate investigation of yesterday’s assault on the Iftar party organized by a number of political groups

 The Egyptian Organization for Human Rights expresses its deep concern regarding yesterday’s violent assault on an Iftar organized by several political parties at the Swiss club in Cairo’s Kitkat district which led to the injury of a number of the attendees and the organizers including Mr. Fareed Zahran the head of the Egyptian Democratic party who walked away with a laceration in his head.

EOHR calls on the Ministry of the Interior to promptly investigate this incident as its a grave violation of the rights to liberty and personal security. These rights are guaranteed by the Egyptian Constitution and international human rights instruments.

Dr. Hafez Abu Seada the president of EOHR stressed that the perpetrators of this incident must be brought to trial for their violation of the right to liberty and security of the person, as well as the threat the posed to public security and safety. Abu Seada added that such actions are activley eliminating the culture of dialogue and is creating a culture of violence at the community level which is a danger that must be avoided.
