EOHR holds its 3rd and final Side Event

 at the 39th session of the UN Human Rights Council

The Egyptian Organization for Human Rights (EOHR) held its third side event at the 39th session of the Human Rights Council under the title Human Rights in Qatar: The plight of Al Ghofran Tribe.

The session was moderated by Mohamed Osman the International Relations Coordinator of EOHR; the speakers were 5 victims representing Al Ghofran tribe and Abdul Azizi Al Khamis Editor in Chief of Al Arab newspaper and a prominent Saudi Human Rights activist. Among the attendace were Dr. Hafez Abu Seada the President of EOHR, Essam Shiha the Secretary General and Tarek Zaghloul the Executive Director.

The representatives of Al Ghofran tribe who participated in the side event that they have decided to take action against the Qatari government after it revoked their citizenships and deprived them from their legitimate right to live as citizens in their homeland. The victims pointed to the fact they have been subjected to the worst forms of repression as their citizenships were taken away, and foreign terrorist leaders were granted the same thing.

Abdul Aziz Al Khamis said in opening statement that members of the Ghofran tribe in cooperation with EOHR, have called on the UN Human Rights High Commissioner to investigate the injustice inflicted on the sons of the tribe by deprivation of nationality and forced displacement.He added that the office of the high commissioner will be provided with full files of cases of tribe members who were stripped of their Qatari nationality.

Dr. Hafez Abu Saada, President of the Egyptian Organization, made a statement during the session in which he stressed once again EOHR’s adoption of the Ghofrani cause. He stated in his remarks that EOHR will hand over the files of the victims to a number of UN special mechanisms, especially the Special Rapporteur on forced displacement, the Special Rapporteur on freedom of opinion and expression, special rapporteur on child protection and Committee on the Rights of the Child. Abu Seada added that depriving children of Al Ghofran tribe from education and citizenship rights constitutes a serious violation of the Convention on the Rights of the Child. He concluded by saying that the ultimate goal of the adoption of EOHR of this issue is the restoration of  all rights of citizenship for the people of the tribe and to lift the injustice and stop the violations that are subjected too.
