Release of journalist Hisham Jaafar with precautionary measures, EOHR calls on the Attorney-General to release the prisoners in custody in the cases of opinion and expression


The Criminal Court of Cairo decided on Wednesday, March 27, 2019, to release the journalist and researcher Hisham Jaafar, director of “Mada” institution for Media Development, with precautionary measures to investigate the case in which he was accused of joining a banned group.
Jafar, who has been in custody since October 2015, faces charges of joining a banned group that was established against the law and receiving an international bribe in case No. 720 of 2015.


The precautionary measures are to check on the accused person that he goes to the police department in his district on a daily basis or periodically, or not to leave the house and to be followed by a security officer from the police station, in addition to banning from travelling.
In this regard, the Egyptian Organization for Human Rights (Eohr) confirms that the decision to release Hisham Jaafar is a positive step to promote the values and principles of human rights.
The organization calls on the Attorney General to release the prisoners in the case of opinion and expression such as Engineer Yehia Hussein Abdel Hadi and Ambassador Masoum Marzouk, as well as the need to make amendments to the articles related to preventive detention in the Criminal Procedure Code in order to comply with the Egyptian constitution and the human rights charters and declarations signed previously by Egypt.
For his part, Dr Hafez Abu Saeda, the president of the organization, stressed on the need to limit the use of pre-trial imprisonment to serious crimes, with the judiciary being given the choice of alternative measures depending on the case of each individual accused.
