EOHR delegation to the 37th session of the Human Rights Council

A summary of EOHR activities in Geneva

 The Egyptian Organization for Human Rights (EOHR) formed a delegation to take part in the 37th session of the United Nations Human Rights Council in Geneva in line with its responsibilities and commitments as one of Egypt’s leading Human Rights entities and as an NGO with special consultative status with the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC). The delegation was composed of Dr. Hafez Abu Seada the president of EOHR, Mr. Essam Shiha the Secretary General of EOHR and Mohamed Gamal Osman the International Relations Coordinator of EOHR.  Court of cassation orders a retrial of 16 defendants in the foreign funding case

EOHR calls upon the authorities to suspend the case

The Court of Cassation issued its verdict cancelling prison sentences ranging from 1 to 2 years for 16 defendants in the so called foreign funding case and ordered their retrial. The 16 defendants belong to 5 foreign human rights NGOs that used to work in Egypt before having their offices shutdown by authorities in 2011. Those organizations were accused of working without proper permits and of receiving unregistered foreign funds. Read the rest of this entry »

The Egyptian Organization for Human Rights found the second day of election very similar to the first just with a slightly lower turnout rate. EOHR’s monitoring mission of the 2018 Egyptian Presidential Elections

Day (1)

Egyptian Presidential Elections began on Monday the 26th of March 2018, and polling will go on for 3 days and will end on the evening of the 28th of March 2018. Competing in the elections are incumbent president Abdel Fattah Al Sisi and Mousa Mostafa Mousa the leader of Al Ghad party. The elections take place in 13,706 polling stations and are supervised by 18,000 Judges assisted by 110,000 government officials. Read the rest of this entry »

EOHR Strongly Condemns the murder of Mariam Abdel Salam and calls upon the British authorities to immediately investigate her death

 

The Egyptian Organization for Human Rights (EOHR) strongly condemns the murder of Mariam Mostafa Abdelsalam an Egyptian student in the City of Nottingham in the United Kingdom of Great Britain.  Mariam an18-year-old girl was brutally attacked about three weeks earlier by a group of 10 females at a bus stop at the city on Nottingham according to eye witness reports. The attack left her in a coma since then. Mariam succumbedto her injuries this morning and passed away. The attack is reported to have been caught on surveillance cameras in the surrounding areas. EOHR calls for the suspension of all investigations of cases relating to Freedom of Expression and Opinion

The Egyptian Organization for Human Rights (EOHR) expresses its deep concern regarding the latest disturbing developments still unraveling in Egypt over the past few days. The most alarming among these developments was the arrest of playwright Walid Atef and Director Ahmed Al Garhi on account of their latest play (Sulieman Khater). Atef and Al Garhi were referred to the military prosecution and have been in military custody ever since. The military prosecution accused both Atef and Al Garhi of insulting the Armed Forces and the artists are expected to stand military trial because of their artistic work. Its worth mentioning that the play narrated the story of Sulieman Khater an Egyptian border guard who shot and killed seven Israeli individuals on the Egyptian Israeli border in October 1985. Khater was trialed and sentenced to life imprisonment however he was found dead in his cell 9 days after the verdict leaving a controversial legacy that lasts to this day in Egyptian society. EOHR strongly Condemns the arrest of Journalist Mai Al Sabagh

The Egyptian Organization for Human Rights (EOHR) expresses its deep concern regarding the recent detention of Journalist Mai Al Sabagh and photographer Ahmed Mostafa in Alexandria. Al Sabagh and Mostafa were arrested for making an investigative video report with a number of Tram inspectors near Masr train Station in Al Manshia district of Alexandria. The police arrested them and referred them to the prosecution and the prosecutor charged Al Sabagh and Mostafa of possessing recording equipment with the aim of spreading false news to undermine public security and the state, harm national interests and recording material without approval from the ministry of culture.  Read the rest of this entry »
